Street Operations

2019 Trans

Street operations work daily to maintain The City’s street network, which consists of 164 center-line miles of streets within the Redmond Urban Growth Boundary. This equates to 328 lane miles. Street's philosophy is that it is better to treat streets with lower-cost, preventative maintenance treatments, such as Seal Coats, Slurry Seals, Chip Seals, and Crack Seals, and extend their life cycle before the street condition deteriorates to a state where it requires more costly rehabilitation and reconstruction treatments.

Seasonal Road Maintenance Projects

Warm weather means Redmond street crews will be out making road repairs. It also means event season is in full swing. Work for the current year is expected to be completed by October and includes Asphalt Overlay, Hot Oil Chip Seal, Slurry Seal,  Surface Seal Coating and Crack Sealing.

As winter approaches the Street Operations  monitor weather reports and moves to a winter work schedule as part of the Snow and Ice PlanBecause emergency routes need to be kept open for the hospital, fire and police, these roads take priority for snow removal and sanding. Following in priority are the arterial and major collectors, minor collectors, residential through streets, and finally, cul-de-sacs.

Street Operations employees are responsible for numerous activities that promote safe use of streets and beautification of the City. Other maintenance activities which you will see going on at various times throughout the year include:

  • Coordinate Adopt-a-Street program
  • Street sweeping: performed daily, throughout the year to mitigate debris
  • Right-of-way maintenance: vegetation control, tree trimming, weed abatement, curb, shoulders, downtown lighting and ditches
  • City beautification: Hang banners (seasonally), holiday lighting, litter clean-up

  • Traffic control: Emergencies and pre-arranged; set up traffic control for parades, public assemblies, Farmers Market
  • Install or construct traffic calming devices and signage
  • Downtown area sidewalks: related to street tree maintenance and appurtenances
  • Coordinate installation of residential lighting
  • Bridge and guard rail maintenance
  • Coordinate drainage mitigation projects: culverts, curb and gutter
